The Goulburn Local Area Command is situated in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales and is situated approximately 100kms from Liverpool and 90kms from Canberra. It has a population of 93,630 (census 2007) and its major centres are Goulburn, Bowral and Yass. Goulburn and Yass are located on the Hume Highway while Bowral is located off the Illawarra Highway.
The Command has an authorised strength of 166 police that comprises of 15 sectors Bigga, Binalong, Bowral, Bundanoon, Collector, Crookwell, Goulburn, Gunning, Marulan, Moss Vale, Robertsons, Tarago, Taralga, Tuena and Yass. The L.A.C comprises of four local government areas Goulburn Mulwaree Council, Upper Lachlan Council, Wingecarribbee Shire Council & Yass Valley Council.
The major industry comprises of farming that mainly concentrates in sheep, cattle and wool and some small wineries. Goulburn is also known for the Goulburn Gaol that can occupy up to 600 inmates at the complex while Berrima has the Berrima Gaol that occupies only female inmates. The Goulburn Gaol is capable of looking after all disciplines of inmates from minimum to maximum, normal segregation, segregation, high risk and extreme high risk inmates. Goulburn also has the NSW Police College where student police officers undertake studies to become probationary constables.
The LAC has the Hume, Federal, Barton Highway and Illawarra Highway that passes through it. The Federal and Barton Highways branch from the Hume and link the command with the Australian Capital Territory. The Hume Highway is the link for Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane traffic with many other major centres branching off the Highway. The Illawarra Highway links the LAC to the coastal area of the state. The Hume is dual carriageway for its entire length within the Goulburn LAC and the annual traffic volume varies from 7.4 million vehicles north of Goulburn to 4.4 million travelling on the Hume near Yass. The Federal Highway annual traffic count is 4.1 million vehicles and during the winter months the traffic volume increases with tourist traffic travelling to the snowfields south of Canberra.
The Federal Highway is the main access to the ACT and the highway branches from the Hume Highway south of Goulburn. It is the link for the snow fields of Thredbo, Perisher Valley, Jindabyne and Cooma. The Barton Highway also branches from the Hume Highway near the township of Yass and is a link to the ACT. Unlike the Hume and Federal Highways the Barton Highway in mainly single carriageway and is subject to heavy traffic volumes with vehicles commuting to and from the ACT. The Illawarra Highway is also single carriageway and branches from the Hume at Sutton Forrest and travels in a easterly direction towards the coast.
The Goulburn Local Area Command resources are partly controlled by the impact that school holidays, public holidays and snow season have due to the fact that the Hume Highway and Federal Highway run through the major part of the Local Area Command.
